After a detour through Paris we arrived in Barcelona mid afternoon and were happy to greet some more good weather. My first impression of Barcelona was quite different to what i had expected. Realistically i didn’t have all that much of an idea, but in my head i really had thought Barcelona was going to a rough, dirty place, what we were greeted with was something totally different; a clean, calm well respected city. You could see how the people respected their city and were very proud of it. An example of this is how in the middle of the city there were Mandarin trees everywhere.... all still bearing fruit....... Fruit trees in the middle of a major city street side walk...... A small thing but pretty amazing to see, something you would ever see in the CBD of Sydney.
Giving ourselves 2 full days to explore Barcelona we set out on foot again to try and cram in as much of the city as we could. Getting up to see the Gaudi park with all the crazy mosaic statues, buildings and chairs, The Cosmo Caixa- A science museum with a built in living Amazon rainforest with red bellied piranha and massive variety of fish and animal life, the Maritime Museum, the Xcholat (chocholate) museum, the Picasso Museum and the Musea d’Historia de Barcelona Placa del Riel. The Last being a museum of the history of Barcelona with underground ruins dating back around 2000 years back to the Roman Age. It was Impressive to see the recovered ruins from that age and then see how the city evolved, continually building on top of the previous until you get to the buildings of today. This would be one of my highlights for sure.
After Barcelona we jumped ship and headed down to Malaga to meet up with the rest of the Cartouche H1 team for our Febuary training camp. Again the weather was awesome with three solid days of clear skies and 20 dergree temperatures we were all loving the sun and showing some skin, though i do apologise to any innocent bystanders that may have been blinded by the reflection of the sun off my pasty white skin. While my legs were still a little sore from my half marathon the previous Friday i managed to get throught the first day dtraining sessions and the two games we played over the three days. In all honesty the teams we played werent that great winning the first (9-1) and the second (8-2) but all in all it was good to get the hockey engine back into gear. Luckily however for Alicia she didnt have to watch making the most of her time in the south of Spain getting in the sights on Malaga and nearby Granada. Im only a little jealous but all in all a good few days with the guys finishing with some good memories.....one specific one of Diederik making 70 euro for eating a tin of cat food or the look on the bar maids face when we ordered 20 mojitos at a bar in town on the fri night. Parting ways with the Cartouche lads Alicia and myself headed off to Malaga Airport for the next part of the trip. Next stop Italy!!!!
